Aboriginal Youth Living Off-Reserve More Likely to Smoke, Use Drugs and Alcohol

A new study has found that Aboriginal youth not living on reservations in Canada use tobacco, alcohol, and drugs significantly more than non-Aboriginal youth, and have more health risks. Most Aboriginals in Canada live off-reserve, and those age 15 and older are more likely than non-Aboriginals to have chronic health conditions, to drink heavily, and to use tobacco and marijuana.

Fewer Young People Exposed to Alcohol Ads in Magazines, but Beer Ads Have Increased

In the United States, most young people begin drinking alcohol at age 13, and every day, more than 5,000 kids under 16 have their first taste of alcohol. With the prevalence of underage drinking, researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health decided to look into how many young people are exposed to alcohol advertising through magazines. They found that exposure decreased by 48 percent between 2001 and 2008. In 2003, the alcohol industry voluntarily pledged to not place alcohol ads in magazines with more than 30 percent youth readership.

Vladimir Putin Warns Young Russians about Substance Abuse at Hip-Hop Awards Show

At a Russian hip-hop awards show Friday night, young fans were praising their prime minister by chanting “Respect, Vladimir Vladimirovich.” Putin took the stage after a rapper’s performance to warn Russia’s youth about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse, which are both major problems across the nation.

Moms’ Top Back-to-School Concern Is Substance Abuse

A recent online survey of more than 2,500 moms conducted by Vocalpoint.com in collaboration with the Partnership for a Drug-Free America found that moms’ top concern about their children heading back to school is that their child might be exposed to kids who drink or use drugs. The next most popular concern was that their kids might feel pressure to do well academically and feel pressure from tests.
