With that comes many additional concerns on the effect of legalization, including increased addiction rates and highway safety. Since medical marijuana sales were approved in Washington, Hawaii and California there has been a 6.6 percent increase in the number of drivers killed in a car crash with the substance in their system.

Marijuana Fuels Increase in Drugged Driving Most adults are aware that significant numbers of people drive a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. However, public awareness does not typically focus as much on the numbers of people who drive while under the influence of various illegal or illicit drugs. Current evidence indicates that drugged driving does not occur as often as drunk driving. Still, drugged driving is just as dangerous (and illegal) as drunk driving, and a study published in January 2014 in the American Journal of Epidemiology indicates that the rate of drug-related motor vehicle fatalities rose substantially in the first decade of the 21st century.

A recent study sought to examine the effects of marijuana use on driving tasks (Anderson, Rizzo, Block Pearlson & O’Leary, 2010). The research involved 50 men and 35 women who were all between the ages of 18 and 31. Each participant had some experience using marijuana but used it less than ten times each month.
