Marianne Woessner sees drug addicts with good jobs and from good families nearly every day. The North Carolina nurse and midwife recently made the discovery that her own daughter was in this category when she was told by a Baltimore police officer that her daughter, Carrie Elisabeth John, died after apparently injecting herself with buprenorphine while trying to get high with her boyfriend, Clinton Blaine McCracken.

Singer Robbie Williams Says Prescription Drug Addiction Almost Killed Him

British singer Robbie Williams has revealed that his prescription drug addiction almost killed him. The 35-year-old told German magazine Stern that he only sought treatment when “death came knocking” on his door.

“It was damn serious. Death had to knock on my door to help me with my decision,” Williams said, admitting that he was still haunted by fears of relapsing, despite being clean for three years.

“I’m aware I have a self-destructive character, but does this hold me back from being happy? No,” he said.

The singer is making a comeback with a new single, Bodies, out on October 12, and a performance on The X Factor.

Anti-Smoking Law in Spain Has Helped Many Quit Smoking

Since the law banning smoking in public places such as bars and restaurants in Spain was enforced in January 2006, 5 percent of waiters have stopped smoking and the number of cigarettes smoked has fallen by almost 9 percent. A new study led by researchers from the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) has shown that the proportion of smokers strongly addicted to nicotine has halved as a result of the law.

In his new autobiography, rap star Bobby Brown says he was first introduced to cocaine by his ex-wife, Whitney Houston. The former drug addict, who was married to Houston from 1992 to 2006, has revealed shocking details of the couple’s relationship in Bobby Brown: The Truth, the Whole Truth and Noting But, due in September 2009.

“I never used cocaine until after I met Whitney. Before then, I had experimented with other drugs, but marijuana was my drug of choice. At one point in my life, I used drugs uncontrollably,” he writes. “I was using everything I could get my hands on, from cocaine to heroin, weed and cooked cocaine.”
