Mephedrone Ban Hasn’t Deterred Users in Northern Ireland

Mephedrone is a synthetic stimulant that produces effects similar to Ecstasy, amphetamines, and cocaine. Although the drug was outlawed in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland earlier this year, researchers from Queen’s University Belfast have found that the ban did not deter people from taking the substance.

When many people think of patent medicines, they conjure up images of wagons going town to town with sales agents promoting “cure alls,” or of the days of the old west when these drugs gained large-scale popularity. Many people may not realize, however, that patent medicines of the late 1800s and early 1900s contained dangerous drugs like heroin and opium, often without knowledge to the user. The drugs were heavily advertised, and their abuse helped contribute to the establishment of today’s drug regulations that help safeguard millions of prescriptions and over-the-counter medications.

Foster Children May Receive Three Times Higher Levels of Prescription Medications

Children involved in the foster system have already experienced neglect or some type of abuse, but recent research suggests they may also receive high numbers of prescription medications. A 2010 report published by Medco Health Solutions indicates close to half (42 percent) of all kids in the foster system are being prescribed drugs to alter or modify their moods; many have prescriptions for three or more medications. Findings suggest providers take a closer look at how prescriptions are administered to children in the foster system, especially in terms of focusing on the child’s individual needs for emotional recovery.
