French Tennis Star Fails Drug Test

Posted on May 10, 2009 in Addiction in the Media

Since age nine Richard Gasquet has been considered the future of French tennis, but now at 22 years of age, his career is on hold after failing drug tests for cocaine. A positive test during competition means an automatic 2-year ban on playing, although he can appeal the decision.

Gasquet would not be the first tennis player to test positive for cocaine. Martina Hingis retired after failing a test at Wimbledon two summers ago; Mats Wilander and Karel Novacek were banned for three months after failing tests at the 1995 French Open; and Spain’s Lourdes Dominguez Lino was suspended for the same period in 2002.
